Whether it’s travel tips, Austria Tourist Information, Vienna Tourist Attractions, Summer Music Festivals, or a quick look into Austria’s history, my intent is to give you valuable insights on some of the known and lesser known Austrian attractions that you may want to explore in person or, as an arm chair traveler. BTW, Austria also happens to be the land of my birth – let’s explore together.
Skiing In Austria
Austria and skiing are synonymous. So if you’re planning a winter skiing vacation, Austria probably has what you’re looking for and more. A quick glance at a map of Austria brings up the thought that it’s possible that geography is truly destiny. With all the high Alpine regions, especially in Tirol, it’s no wonder skiing is the nation’s national sport.
Fighting the instinct to shush and slalom in Austria is . . . well, an uphill battle. Consider this factoid: agriculture accounts for 3% of General Net Product (GNP); skiing clocks in at an amazing 4.5%. So, just give in and go there for a skiing vacation.
What you will find or discover this upcoming or any other skiing season, is that Austria offers a broad range of skiing experiences to fit any skill level, budget, or time frame. A quick scan of the most famous ski region, Tirol, has thirty resorts. The country as a whole has over 200. You’re exhausted just considering the choices.
To get a better idea of what you might find for downhill skiing, here are some recommendations on where to go based on your skill level.
Central Vienna Attractions
The major Vienna Attractions are located in and around the “Heart of Vienna”, in what is known as Vienna’s Central of First District. This is also the city’s major tourist draw. One can spend several days walking and exploring this area.
The District is delineated by what today is known as the Ringstrasse, which actually are a several streets forming a semi-circle around this old part of Vienna. The west bank of the Danube River completes the circle. Ringstrasse replaced the wall, remnants of which can still be seen today, that encircled the original city and protected it from invaders such as the Ottomans. Within this district you’ll find the architecture and spirit that attracted the greats of the past and today – visitors from around the world.
Within the Ringstrasse, you’ll find the well known Vienna Attractions such as the Hofburg Palace, with its 700 year history, the Vienna State Opera House, St. Stephens Cathedral, magnificent court yards, city park, memorials, etc. Here you’ll even find a touch of Americana - just a touch though.
